Authorities are investigating a tragic dock collapse that claimed the lives of seven people during a weekend festival celebrating a historic community of descendants of slaves on Sapelo Island. The incident occurred on Saturday at Marsh Landing Dock, when a gangway collapsed, sending at least 20 people plunging into the water.

The collapse happened during the annual festival, which brings together members of the Gullah Geechee community, descendants of West African slaves who were brought to the coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina in the 18th and 19th centuries.
