Mystery Illness Claims Over 140 Lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

A deadly mystery illness is sweeping through the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), claiming the lives of at least 143 people in the southwestern province of Kwango. The outbreak, which began in late October 2024, has primarily affected women and children, with over 376 reported cases to date. Victims exhibit flu-like symptoms including high fever, severe headaches, persistent coughing, breathing difficulties, and profound anemia.
